Calculating the numerical value of the fine structure constant from theory was one of the most difficult problems in mathematical physics for the greater part of the 20th century. James G. Gilson, Emeritus Staff, Queen Mary College, University of London, maintains a website entitled "The fine structure constant, a 20th century mystery." He has just updated that site and has recommended the update to UniSci as a news item in these words: "I would like to submit the contents of my website."
Rather than attempt to paraphrase his fine, clear words (or to follow the argument of his mathematics), we refer the mathematicians and physicists among UniSci readers to Professor Gilson's website. For them, the update will be good news, which we always enjoy passing along.
